I’m thrilled to see autonomous cars built with the care only a company like Google can bring. It’s not just because I want everyone to be in vehicles so cute that hugging them is a natural impulse, but because of they way they could help us reshape our lives. Imagine a city with  no personal vehicles and think of how it is reshaped: cars that can be called on command and never kept with a person, land freed from being wasted as parking spaces, streets free from the dangers, frustrations and clutter of cars driven by people, and people freed to interact with each other while moving about a city. It takes the imagination and critical competencies of futurism and science fiction to understand just how much driverless cars will change us, but it’s past time that we moved into that better way of living.
