I’ve loved most of Craig Thompson’s comics, so Space Dumplins was a mixed experience for me. His art is at its best here, expressive and vibrantly coloured by Dave Stewart. It’s a beautiful, madcap adventure visually. The story fell very flat for me. It at times felt tone deaf and the dialogue felt kludgy and a poor fit for a YA book. There’s good in the book, with environmentalism, loyalty and selflessness being highlighted, but it never quite clicked for me.
