I’ve been playing the Mega Man X DiVE closed beta for a couple days. Its premise is weirdly meta, with a story of a player being sucked into a Mega Man X SNES game and battling through levels that have become corrupted.
The characters and the world of the game are well rendered and the soundtrack is very faithful. There is a small selection of characters to play as, but they are the ones I’d most want to see. This feels like a Mega Man X game and it is a satisfying return to this series.
The game play is typical of phone action games, with on screen buttons and a lot of sliding of thumbs. I was able to pair a game pad to make it easier to move X and other characters around, but full button mapping wasn’t ready in this build. I think it’ll be solid once full controller support is implemented.
The collectibles, customizable weapons load out and upgrade systems can all be a bit intimidating, but the game does a good job at introducing them through its tutorial. There are a lot of moving parts, but they don’t distract too much from the classic X game play.
Overall I’m looking forward to being able to play the game in a polished full release, with proper game pad controls. If only it would get a Switch release.
