I first played Metroid: Samus Returns shortly after it was released, but I bounced off the melee combat that was the novel mechanic added in the remake and set the game aside for years. I’m playing through the 2D Metroid games before Metroid Dread is released, so I gave the game another shot and had a much better experience after I got the hang of melee counters.

The original Metroid II: Return of Samus wasn’t a game that I got very into, but this one became hard to put down once I started running up against compelling challenges and superbly designed environments. In the end I consider this game to be comparable to Zero Mission, Super and Fusion as overall excellent games. It was satisfying to play through to the iconic Baby Metroid moment.
