I went to a comic shop in person for the first time in a few years while in BC. It was a shop that focused very heavily on super heroes, so I wasn’t able to find the trade I was hoping for, but I did pick up the one-shot Miles Morales & Moon Girl. My daughter has been a bit obsessed with Spidey and His Amazing Friends lately, so I figured this might be a good comic to read to her ahead of the new Moon Girl animated series.

The story follows Moon Girl as she searches for Devil Dinosaur with the help of Spider-Man Miles Morales. It’s a fun comic that’s mostly accessible but probably has too much Marvel weirdness to be a good first comic for someone wanting to get a feel for either of the title characters. Celestine can’t get enough of having me read the comic to her, and with her love of dinosaurs and attraction to super heroics it’s a good fit.

Join Lunella Lafayette – aka Moon Girl – and her trusty T-rex sidekick, Devil Dinosaur, in their biggest adventure yet! In the first of three one-shots, Moon Girl takes on the whole Marvel Universe alongside Miles Morales, the Avengers and the X-Men. Don’t miss this new story from acclaimed writer Mohale Mashigo!

In June I picked up Miles Morales & Moon Girl and read it to my daughter. The next standalone issue following Moon Girl’s search for Devil Dinosaur brings in the Avengers, and it’s a weirder issue. Avengers & Moon Girl is heavier on strange Marvel elements, like the High Evolutionary and X-Men on the moon, so I feel like there are missed opportunities here to make things accessible to new readers. Much of this is a Captain Marvel team up rather than a full Avengers story, and keeping things limited in that way is probably for the best. There are some fun moments in this issue and the core of this story works.
