I finally sat down to read the second volume of Kei Sanbe’s Island in a Puddle this weekend. I was struck by the real sense of menace and danger hanging over the protagonists, both children, though one transferred into a murderer’s body. It’s a heartbreaking situation that seems to be Sanbe’s signature storytelling style. With every turn of the page there’s a lingering sense of dread tinged with the hope that comes from kind characters.
Tension mounts as Minato, who’s mind was mysteriously swapped into the body of a wanted man on the run for murder, tries to figure out his next move. Stranded, alone, he starts to formulate a plan to get to his younger sister, who’s now in the care of the man whose body he swapped with, without suspicion. However, it’s not only the police after the man whose body he now occupies—a shadowy organization called the Dodokai is closing in, too…
