Episode 4 of Voltes V leaned a bit further into monster of the week but had a moving sibling teaching story at its core.

The villains constructed a Attack Beast with the brain of a master swordsman and he’s given horns, the symbol of nobility. It’s convenient to have nobles marked so clearly as evil.

Daijiro is shown to have the uncanny ability to catch sword blades, setting up the team’s later path to victory.

Gard outclasses Voltes V, and even the Heaven Sword fails to work so the team retreats.

In a mountain hideout, Daijiro explains that his plan is to teach Kenichi to use his sword catching technique through Voltes V against Gard. Kenichi needs to be the one to catch the blade because he controls Voltes V’s core brain functions.

A long, brutal and bloody training sequence follows and Kenichi finally masters the technique by switching to being shot at instead of having a wooden sword swung at him.

The final battle commences and Kenichi is able to use the new sword catching technique to have Voltes V catch Gard’s sword and then dispatch him with a Heaven Sword V-Slash.
