Watching an episode of Voltes V every week has been delightful because of the unexpected plots. Episode 6 had a sweet bat robot monster to fight, sure, but at the core it was about the love of a cowboy for his horse.
The episode opens with Ippei volting out in the middle of training to rescue a foal, setting up his love for horses that is central to the plot.
Ippei’s history with a horse named Eiffel is revealed, including that the two were teaching rodeo sports in Japan.
It was then revealed that Ippei was taken against his will to train with the Defense Force.
Ippei attempts to go AWOL but is stopped by Kenichi. The two come to blows.
It’s revealed that the doctor already sent for the horse, the brawl ends, and Ippei reunites with Eiffel at the airport in Tokyo.
Of course, that’s when the bat beast knight arrives and traps Ippei and Eiffel in rubble. Kenichi arrives and frees both.
More conflict emerges between the two protagonists, and Eiffel gets lost in the carnage of battle with the beast knight.
Ippei’s attempts to go it alone get him captured by the beast and prevent a v-together to finish it off.
Teamwork and an electromagnetic field lead to the quick victory once they do form Voltes V.
Eiffel is rescued and the team is able to unite again, with a sunset fittingly closing out the episode.
