Ahead of the new album The Capitalist Blues being released next week, Leyla McCalla has a video for the song “Money is King”. It and the album’s title track are moving folk songs with an unwavering sense of social justice.
Brass Against the Machine puts out stellar covers, primarily of Rage Against the Machine songs.
A Perfect Circle‘s Eat the Elephant is a wonderful album, start to finish. The two standout tracks for me are the the scathing “TalkTalk” and the winking, soaring “So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish”.
Janelle Monáe’s “Make Me Feel” channels Prince in the best way.
Altered Sweet is an overflowing, delightful tribute album featuring covers of Matthew Sweet songs. Futureman Records has put together 27 cover songs from as many artists and overall it’s a great collection. I would have liked to hear more brave reinterpretations of the songs, and a few dozen more songs, but it does pay capable tribute to one of the greatest songwriters and his diverse body of work. Highlights for me include Fireking‘s take on “Dead Smile“, simplefriend’s version of the hit “Sick of Myself“, and Gretchen’s Wheel‘s “Walk Out“.
“Here” is the first video from Ruby Ibarra’s excellent CIRCA91.
