I’ve been enjoying episodes of NHK’s Zero Waste Life series as they pop up on YouTube, and Loaves of Light is fascinating. An artist in Japan takes bread that won’t be eaten and creates light fixtures from them. The warm glow of these lights is so cozy.

I’ve been enjoying episodes of NHK’s Zero Waste Life series as they pop up on YouTube, and Loaves of Light is fascinating. An artist in Japan takes bread that won’t be eaten and creates light fixtures from them. The warm glow of these lights is so cozy.

There’s something magical about these pieces, but using food for things other than to nourish people while anyone is going without will always be ethically challenging. There are certainly ways that excess food can be delivered to hungry people, and it’s a shame so much goes to waste.

A fresh approach to food waste has stale bread being remade into lamps that leave a warm glow wherever they’re set.
