The Onion Girl

Sophie looked at him for a long moment. “I always believed in you,” she said. “You know that, don’t you?”
He nodded.
“I don’t know why,” she added, “but that was never a question for me.”
When she reached a hand across the table, he covered it with his own and they sat like that for a time, looking ay each other, and smiling.
