“I know I’m an acquired taste: I’m anchovies. And not everyone wants those hairy little things. If I was potato chips, I could go more places.”
“According to one story, the six year old Tori was once being teased by an elder member of the Peabody Conservatory and so turned to her tormentor and said “Fuck you, I can play Mozart.”
“I like modesty, that’s where I am. I think you can be sensual without showing too much. To me that’s more radical because it’s about what goes on underneath. I’m pretty shy; maybe it’s my mixed Celtic/Cherokee heritage. As a musician, of course, I write down the most intimate things and say them to lots of people. On stage, I’m shedding so much emotionally, but physically that’s where I draw the line.”
“I don’t want to be buried. My grandmother was convinced I should be burned as a witch and I think that’s probably right, that’s how I should go.”
“My mother, she’s such a Christian woman and I love her dearly, would tell me a story of people in a storm that were holed up in a church, they prayed, and they feel the angel saved them from death. And yet other people were killed in the storm. And their comment was, ‘The angel saved us.’ Well, what about those people who didn’t get saved? What about the mother who loses her baby? What do you say to her? ‘Your prayers weren’t enough? You didn’t know the right things to say? You weren’t enough?’ Then you’re talking about a hierarchy that God has for saving certain people and not others.”
“My concept of the creator isn’t male, or just female. Just is the key word here. It’s an energy. It’s a force that doesn’t exclude any kind of gender. I think it’s so beyond gender.”
The whole idea about religion is it’s an institution that makes you feel like a group, but actually fosters separateness and hierarchy. So that if you’re not part of this, then you don’t have anything. America does that. British football does that. Being an Italian male. Being Islamic. So many people have a belief. Almost every culture, every ‘group’ – quote, unquote – has a way it wants to perceive things. And when I write songs, the Christians feel that because I’m not speaking the way they would like me to, that I don’t believe in God, that I’m not part of the Christian formula. But being a minister’s daughter, I know it very well. If you’re brought up with parents who are painters, you probably see everything in light and shade. I can smell a rat real quick when someone tries to tell me their way is the way. And see, I don’t think my way is the way for everybody.
Some that my disciples will enjoy:
“On some of my darkest days, Lucifer’s the one who comes and gives me an ice cream.”
“i always thought that i would make the perfect girlfriend for jesus.”
“I wanted to marry Lucifer… Even though I had a crush on Jesus.”
