Buck 65 Speaks

You know, there’s lots about the UK that I love, and lots about the US that I hate, but I’ll tell you one thing: freedom to me is dropping 25 cents into a payphone and gabbing until your face turns blue. Shoot the proverbials all day! It’s fine! Know what I’m saying? Frig.

BUCK SPEAKS

Buck touched down long enough to write you a little note:

Lovers,

Rise! Heal! Lift your chins! Higher! The fish are a-bitin’…

I’m looking for your opinion again. I figure it’s a toss up between
Serge Gainsbourg and Bruce Lee as to who was the coolest
man to ever walk the earth. What do you think? And, yeah, yeah, I
know… I was talkin’ all that ‘coolness’ jazz a while back, and
blah, blah… Let it go for the moment. You know what I’m talking
about. Bruce kicking twenty guys asses while eating an apple?
It’s undeniable. And have you ever listened to ‘Initials B. B.’ by
Serge? ‘Ford Mustang’? The Whitney Houston story? Come on!
Make a case for me…

You know, there’s lots about the UK that I love, and lots about the
US that I hate, but I’ll tell you one thing: freedom to me is
dropping 25 cents into a payphone and gabbing until your face
turns blue. Shoot the proverbials all day! It’s fine! Know what I’m
saying? Frig.

Scandal! Damon Albarn spotted picking up after his dog!
Football star shops at TopShop! God help us all!

I just want to take a second to say that I think it’s terrific that
SixToo has signed to NinjaTune, even if he is a weiner. Way to
go Bobby! Oh, and hey! For all those out there who are
concerned with having the most obscure record collection on
earth and masturbating to your reflection, come around my place
next garbage night. There will be a huge pile of shit cd’s on the
curb you can pick up.

ps – All I listen to anymore is Bob Dylan.

So. The new album is finished, and is getting mastered and set
in stone in a few weeks. As I may have mentioned, it’s called
‘The Talkin’ Honky Blues’. The first single is called ‘Wicked and
Weird’, and will be out as a 12″ in July. For those who’ve seen
me live in the last few months, it’s the ho-down song. I’m
psyched for you to hear it. I’m shooting a video for it in a couple
of weeks as well…

I believe the new album is a quantum leap forward. Previous to
this one, the longest I ever worked on an album was two weeks,
and that was ‘Square’. Most of the others were done in a few
days. I think that’s a great way to work sometimes. But for this
one, it’s taken a whole year. There’s unbelievable attention to
detail. I still used the SP-1200 to make it. But this is also the
first record that wasn’t made in my bedroom. I think that lyrically,
it’s my best work by a mile. With the cuts, I got more ambitious
than ever in incorporating the turntable into the production. It’s
not just some random sounds laid over top of the beats. It’s
intrugal. You’ll see.

Inspiration was taken from Tom Waits (as you might have come
to expect), King Tubby, Nick Drake, Johnny Cash, Calexico, the
city of paris, Charles Bukowski, Henry Miller, Anais Nin, travelling
(especially by car this time), and going nuts. Most of these
influences will be quite obvious, I think.

The record is very heavy. It’s quite relentless. There are some
quiet moments and some good laughs, but even then, it’s a
pile-driver. I’ve endevoured to make a record that transends the
boundries of hip hop while staying true to the morals I’ve always
believed in. The breaks are heavier and deeper than ever. I also
experimented a bit with creating my own sounds by banging on
things, breaking things, doing things under-water, you name it.
Midi techniques were employed like never before.

What it comes down to, is that it’s an unbelievably nerdy record
for anyone interested in getting analytical, while remaining totally
listenable. If this makes any sense, I think it’s perhaps my most
challenging and most accessable work at the same time. I really
hope you like it. I feel pretty confident that you will. I know I’m
psyched.

Just as a side note, I’ve written 12 songs since recording the
vocals for THB. So I’m sittin’ on a mountain of stuff. I’m just
figuring out what to do with it all and how I can get it all to you
within this year. Be on the lookout.

My recent trip to the UK was a whole lot of fun. Feels like I made
a lot of new friends. Thanks a million to everyone who came out
to see me. Bring your parents along next time. I got lots of kisses
on this tour which I like better than bacon. Next I’m off to tackle
the mid-western US and New York and a few other spots. I also
have my performance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra
coming up, which I’m very excited about. Come on out! See
below for all the upcoming dates…

Be well. Drink more water. I love you…
