Since emerging in the present day, Cap has been embraced by the American people. But the country is different than the one he knew. As the nation has undergone political and social upheavals, Rogers has been forced to re-evaluate his role. For a brief period, he even cast off the mantle of Captain America, unable to fight for a dream in which he no longer believed. Rogers later reclaimed his heroic identity to prove to the world that the American ideals are greater than the sum of any one governmental body.
Captain America’s modern-day missions most often have involved individuals and groups that would see their philosophies supercede democracy, including the Red Skull and Hydra. Cap’s allies through the years have included the Falcon and Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. Given his history and his unflagging moral compass, Captain America has led the Avengers and other adventurers through countless crises. Younger heroes look up to him, while his contemporaries often seek his counsel.
As Cap has come to represent the United States in the minds of the American people and citizens the world over, certain government agencies and politicians have attempted to assert authority over the hero. But Cap stands for people more than politics, the preservation of the American dream rather than one political party’s views.
Re-energized in his belief in America and what it stands for since terrorists attacked New York and Washington, D.C., Captain America has realized he is needed now more than ever to stand up to those who would see his country in ruins.
You see, Marvel decided to run stories with Captain America post-Sept. 11, 2001 that explored the attocities that America has committed that have caused the terrorist problem, and which feed it even to this day. They made a stand against corrupt government and have recieved much praise for not following the super patriotic bullshit much of America did. So a few people think he’s a traitor now because Captain America thinks for himself and wishes for a return to a free and just America, one he once thought he served… And he also realizes that America must accept blame for the terrorism problem it helped create.
Anyway, I may have to pick up some of the current issues sometime soon… I really like the story concepts and the direction the book is headed.

Oddly enough, people seem to think that stories, ideals, heroes can’t change with the times. It’s quite sad.
