What happens is, once you are 18 you are put into a sort of lottery system where your name is drawn and you are sent a summons to appear for jury duty on a certain date. Just because you are on jury duty doesn’t mean you are selected for the jury and the process usually involves a lot of waiting. You are not paid for doing jury duty on the first day as most people are excused then. On the second day, you are paid $0.34 for each mile you drive to the court, one way, and $15 for your services.
Well, I think it’s very important to combat ignorance. One of the most effective ways is to show people how ridiculous it can be. There is a battle to show people the truth, and any method of getting it out there is valid in my opinion.
For the record, that is an editorial cartoon from an American city(Seatle, I believe). So it’s coming from an American who’s just as disgusted as the rest of us at how blind most Americans have become.
i don’t care who its from. i just wish people would spend as much time supporting the troops as they do complaining about the war. i don’t support this war, i’d rather we’d never went to war and no one had to die or experience hardship so far from home – but its happening, its happened, its going to happen again. war is a part of life. without war there is no peace. humans are bickering, bitchy and harsh, we fight, and we go to war and eventually make peace again. and no one can claim that they are any different.
as for the cartoon? i’m just offended at it calling anyone dumber than a rock. so obviously if i don’t agree with it, i must be dumber than a rock – yes?

The cartoon is meant to show people how ignorant most of us are about the world and this invasion. By calling people dumber than a rock, it’s pointing out how irrational this unwavering belief in military and government is. I would rather be insulted and awakened than not confronted at all and remain ignorant.

and as my friend logically pointed out “you can’t put me in a big house with a bunch of people and not expect there to be fighting at some point.”

Violence and war can almost always be avoided. Someone pissed you off? You don’t go around throwing fists. It’s common sense that treating people nicely will make everyone generally nicer. The world works like that. You kill someone’s sister, and you provoke anger and more violence.
Millions of new terrorists were created by this war. It made no one safer.
This is not about something as superficial as American Idol. This is about the murder of thousands of innocents, about throwing an already pretty bad system into utter chaos. The Iraqis are worse off now. They have lost order, lost freedoms and lost securities. They have also lost their families and friends. Their existance is nothing but loss and has been since the Gulf War.
Mostly what this is about is combating societies of ignorance. That is a “war” that is never ending. This is not about one war. This is about a legacy of violence, fear and lies that must be stopped.
We will be “still going on about it” forever, because evil never rests. We always have to work to make our world safer and less violent.

and war isn’t supposed to make anyone safe. i never said it would. i never said the world was a safer place because we went to war.
as long as we’re going to play superman and attempt to eliminate or lessen levels of violence, why not attempt to take on world hunger, poverty and low literacy rates at the same time? you know, as long as we’re battling evil.
the dividing line between the two beliefs is just annoying. i believe in several topics presented on both sides of the issue. so, does that makes me hypocritical? undecided? or dumber than a rock?
i think that’s just what made me reply to this, not to instigate a discussion on the war – because believe me i don’t care to discuss it, it makes me have to consider how i feel about it and i’m content to live in the bliss of the simple question “is dad coming home or not?” or “is kendra coming home or not?” [yes, i’m admitting to finding the cliche of ‘ignorance is bliss’ rather tempting] – but maybe to point out that … well, maybe i had no real point other than i was offended because i’m not entirely anti-war.

All that cartoon was really trying to point out was ignorance about the issue. Whatever decision you make, you must always know the facts before you blindly believe anything. Being undecided or sitting on a fence is not entirely wrong, but doing so without trying to discover the truth isn’t helpful to yourself or others either.
