While touring together for the past couple months, Saul Williams and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails have begun work on a new genre-defying album together, hopefully to be released sometime in the next year. We were honored when Saul dropped by the loft last night while coming through town for a poetry reading at CU Boulder, supporting his new book The Dead Emcee Scrolls. Ken invited about a dozen of us to join the fun—it was an incredible evening, filled with pizza, beer, and the personal ruminations of a true hip-hop visionary. Then Saul plugged his iPod Nano into Ken’s speakers and began playing pre-mixed tracks from his sessions with Trent. I have honestly never heard anything like it—Saul’s words were beautiful shards of broken glass, jagged yet excruciatingly vulnerable, synchronized perfectly with Trent’s accompaniment, which ebbed and flowed from gentle sonic vistas to the precipice of chaotic meltdown. My experience of the sound was one of being both ripped open and healed at the same time, a sonic reflection of the Eternal Heart which is simultaneously forever broken as well as utterly invincible. Needless to say, it was a precious moment for all of us, and we are deeply grateful to Saul for sharing his radiance with us. ~Posted by Corey W. deVos (dj rekluse)
