Apollo was considered one of the great gods of Olympus. He was son to Zeus and twin brother of Diana (goddess of the moon and of hunting). He was the god of archery, prophecy, music, poetry, and healing. As leader of the Muses (9 daughters of Zeus who were the goddesses of memory and the arts and sciences), he was given a special lyre by Mercury. In turn, he gave music to woman (Pandora) when she was created. In addition, he fathered Orpheus, the god of music.
He came to be known as the sun god and was “the incarnation of the Greek ideal of youthful manhood”. He was physically beautiful and was the stereotypical “Greek God”. However, he was also known for causing trouble among the other gods. He was the one who guided the arrow that killed Achilles, he sometimes caused quarrels between others, and he tricked Diana into killing Orion (a hunter). Despite this, he was more well known as a healer and a giver of gifts.
