Before leaving for Halifax my Dad was about 45 minutes late getting home because he had to golf behind some really slow golfers during his morning round. As soon as he arrived home he, my mother and I got in the car and left…When we were about 15 minutes from the museum Nathan called me and said he would meet me there too. Ten minutes later Sarah called to see when we’d be getting there…
We got to the museum around 2:30 or 2:45… Sarah, her mother and Nathan were there at first… then we walked to meet Sascha, his brother Shane, Sascha’s sister and her friend, Sarah’s father and some friends of her family. They were all rather cool… Sarah and Sascha had always told me her father looks like a dwarf(an older Gimli is what he reminded me of) and I finally got to see that it was true. Her parents are quite hippie-like as well so it was interesting… It was also the first time I’ve seen Sascha’s hair since he cut it a few months ago… he really looks a lot different now… Has a Will Turpin-like hairdo… shortish curly hair… I think it can safely be said that I have the best hair now. π
We walked a while until we got to the gates, where we didn’t have to wait long at all… My camera even got through the security checks easily, as did Sascha’s. It was certinly the easiest entrance I’ve ever had to a concert. While waiting I gave Nathan my cell phone so he could call Mark. Sadly he wasn’t able to make the show. π
Sarah, Sascha, Nathan, Shane and I went to the main pit area once we were inside while the “adults” went to get a good spot on the hill. It wasn’t long before Buck 65 came on. Nathan and I went deep into the pit to see him… he is really under-rated but a big show like this really doesn’t suit him all that well… his voice just doesn’t project as well because he does a lot of spoken word-like stuff… His band and sound were great from where we were but his set was too short. He didn’t have time to play Centaur.
Once Buck 65 was done we met the others in front of the sound booth. We just talked about random thing, caught up and talked about the place we’ll be getting and how we’re going to look soon. Sascha has been checking the classifieds everyday so at least we have that advantage. We were even talking about maybe getting other people and renting a full house but I doubt that will happen. Shane said he’d join us but he needs to move back in with his folks for a while to be able to pay off some debt.
It took a while for the stage change and for Crush to come on. When they did we once again went far into the pit. It actually was quite energetic for a pop-rock band… There were crowd surfers but they were inexperienced and didn’t know how to do it properly… they didn’t hold their arms out for some reason… I was impressed with Crush more than I expected… they do have a good live show but not knowing more than 3 songs didn’t make it all that memorable. The closing song, “Live” was the obvious highlight.
There was another rather long wait for Sarah Harmer during which I got an Our Lady Peace Gravity t-shirt… There were Buck 65 “Mt. Uniack”(sp?) jerseys as well and I almost got one… Crush was signing things at the merch tent then and Sascha’s sister got their autographs… Then we went to stand by the sound + light booth to wait for the next act. During that time Andrew, Nathan’s friend showed up and talked with us for a while.
Sarah Harmer‘s set didn’t go over as well as I had expected. I guess it was just that the crowd was too interested in rock and simply too big. She seems like an artist more suited to perform in clubs and other more intimate shows… The music was quite good but not as impressive as the other acts… Her final song, “Basement Appartmet”(I believe that’s what it’s called) was really great, though, and the only one I knew well… If she comes to the Marquee this fall I’d certainly like to see her again so that I can see if her show changes.
As soon as her show was over Sascha, Shane, Nathan, Sascha’s sister and I started wading through the crowd toward the stage. The other acts didn’t compare at all the the number of people in the pit and all around for Our Lady Peace. By the time they took the stage it was completely packed and the pit was brimming with energy. We were about 10 people from the front by this time… The surfing was exensive for OLP… every few seconds I had to pass more people overhead… There’s something strange yet not as disgusting as it should be to be crowded by thousands of people and covered in your sweat, their sweat and the water the security and band threw on us… almost like a not-so-nice smelling baptism… I eventually made it very close to the front, merely 2 people back and directly in front of Raine. The music was great and the crowd reacted to it much the same as they had last time… A good number of the songs were from the newest release, Gravity, so I didn’t know some of them… All their older songs were great, especially “Superman’s Dead”… It’s hard to breathe the dead air in the pit so by the time they played “Somewhere Out There”, about an hour into the set, I had to leave the pit to breathe, crash on the hill and recover. A few minutes later I was walking through the crowd again, though…
After their performance I had lost track of all my friends since some were surfing and I had left for a few minutes… I ran into Amanda, a girl I knew from highschool while I was looking for them and talked for a while… Then I walked around the hill to see if I could find Sarah and her family… With no luck I returned to the main area where I met up with Andrew and we walked around trying to find Nathan… By the time The Hip came on we found Sarah and I stayed there while Andrew went into the pit to surf and look for Nathan…
The Tragicly Hip‘s show impressed me very much… I didn’t realize how many songs I knew by them… I don’t think there was a single one I didn’t recognize… Every song, from “Music At Work” to the opening “Use It Up” were really energetic and really well done… I’m not sure if I would rank their performance above OLP but I think they were at least comparable on most levels.
Once they finished up their encore I went with Sarah and her family to their car… They had to drop off a friend and then stop at her brother Mark’s place for a little while. The rest of the drive Sarah and I talked about university, people we know and fairly random stuff. It was really nice to be able to talk to her again. I missed our daily convos quite a lot…
At the Wittenberg ballfield we met my dad and I he brought me back here…
