What is Strangers in Paradise?
SiP is a comic book created by Terry Moore which began as a mini-series published by Antarctic Press in November, 1993. The regular series from Terry Moore’s own Abtract Studio began in 1994 and continued to gain readers as each new issue became available. Finding it difficult to self publish and continue to produce such a high quality comic Terry Moore signed on with Jim Lee’s Home Studios. Starting in August (which actually turned out to be November), 1996, SiP continues to be available under the Homage imprint of Image Comics. Strangers in Paradise continually receives high praise from fans, dealers, people who claim they don’t read comics, and other comic professionals. With the move to Homage Studios SiP should continue to increase its readership because it will now be available to a larger distribution audience.
What is Strangers in Paradise about?
The mini-series was a self contained story that introduced the three main characters, Katina Choovanski (Katchoo), Francine Peters, and David. The story centered around the collapse of Francine’s relationship with her boyfriend, Freddie Femur. It also shows the first meeting between Katchoo and David. This story is more comical than the one in the regular series, but, it is a good introduction to the people whose lives the book is to follow.
The Second series furthers the interaction between the main characters and reveals interesting facets of their individual lives. Specifically, the first nine issues reveal aspects of the shadowy past that haunts Katina Choovanski and how that past forces itself onto her present. Starting with issue 10 a new story arc focussing on the relationships formed by the main characters is told.
Having hopefully put her past behind her, Katchoo begins this next phase of her life in the company of people who love and care for her, Francine and David. The Thrid series begins with the quest for new jobs, freeby rent, and with a hint (or promise) of problems for the young couple in the future.
