Flood

This past week there was a major rain storm here in Nova Scotia. The area where I grew up, and where my family lives was hit quite hard. Bridges were swept away by the river, homes greatly damaged and the roads torn to pieces.

The road in front of my parents’ home was one of the well damaged stretches of road, and their lane aquired a 4′ deep crevice which made it impossible for them to drive their cars across, and which left my sister Ilea stranded one day after school.

Tonight my Aunt Lucy and Uncle Larry sent me some photos of the road in front of my perents’ home, and the driveway which was washed out.

From the person who sent the photos to my aunt: “you really can’t tell by this picture, but there is about a 4′ drop from the pavement edge.”

We certainly have weather that can cause damage like that very rarely here, but this flooding was certainly dangerous. Upper Stewiacke, the community where I went to elementary school, declared a “state of emergency” because all the bridges were out. One person who I went to school with for years had his home burn to the ground because fire trucks were not able to reach his house due to the washed out bridge.
