I’ve been getting out of the apartment more and more this past week. Friday, Saturday and today I went for fairly lengthy walks around the city for exercise, exploration and time to think about various things. I definitely find those walks to be very good for me, and with the nice weather we’ve been having here in Halifax lately, being outdoors for hours is wonderful.
On my adventure today I willfully became lost. I wandered until I had no clue where I was and then attempted to find my way back to familiar territory. This lead me to discover an interesting house. It seemed to me to be a strange hybrid of gingerbread house, cartoon dwelling and English cottage. I wanted to move in right away.
I’ve been listening to Broken Social Scene’s b-sides album, the brilliantly titled Beehives, on and off for a couple weeks. It’s certainly not as astounding as You Forgot It In People, but it still stands as a great collection of songs. The songs on this disc are gentler than those found on the most recent L.P. and are mostly instrumental tracks.
“Market Fresh” provides the closest to a You Forgot It In People track, featuring the familiar vocal style of songs such as “Lover’s Spit” and “Stars and Sons”.
“Backyards” is the stand out track for me. Emily Haines’ vocals on “Anthems For a 17 Year-Old Girl” hooked me on You Forgot It In People, and her singing on this track is equally enchanting.
This is a CD worth every cent it might cost. Expect it to be a quality b-sides CD, but hunt down the Broken Social Scene albums for a more true taste of their music. Whether you are a fan of Broken Social Scene or unaware of them, you’ll find beauty here to adopt.
