Radioshack is running a contest to meet Collective Soul and see a concert by them. One of the locations listed is Halifax. Does anyone know anything more about this. I’m praying it’ll be a day I have off or can manage to get off. *fingers crossed*

I’m also looking forward to the new accoustic album, From The Ground Up. It’s nice to see bands releasing two albums in a 5 month period. Counting the DVD/CD sympony set coming later in the year, that’ll be three in roughly a year. You wouldn’t have seen that while the band was on a major. Indie = More.

That isn’t necessarily true. Maybe that isn’t the case with Collective Soul, but most bands that have any sort of success with new albums come out with acoustic albums shortly after the release. Matchbox 20, 3 Doors Down, Maroon 5 and Godsmack are the first bands that come to mind. Also, the same can be said for the live cd/dvd thing with The White Stripes, Hoobastank, Billy Talent, 3 Doors Down (again), Jet, Jimmy Eat World and a few others I can’t remember have all released live dvds shortly after the release of a successful album.
I was referring to 3 albums in one year. It’s rare to see that many releases marketed by the big leagues.
Yeah, me too – The first three bands I mentioned all had the one cd, and then an acoustic album right away. I don’t think Maroon 5 had a dvd though. Matchbox 20 and 3 Doors Down did though. Jet didn’t release a live cd, but they released a rarities cd and and a live dvd.
The other thing is the Dvd’s or acoustic albums being released with a pecial edition of the cd… like Los Lonely Boys, Switchfoot, Norah Jones and a bunch of other bands.
I don’t think it’s necessarily a label thing. I think it’s more that people want more these days, and bands are just starting to realize it.
Either way – more Collective Soul is a very, very good thing – regardless of the reason.
I think DVD inclusions have become standard issue with many releases to compete with downloading. There has to be incentive for someone to buy an album. I wonder if there is any concrete sales increase with the inclusion of a DVD or not.
Did you hear about CS’s DVD project? It’s quite an extensive endevour, similar to Metalica’s S&M, but with a youth orchestra, playing on the theme of their last album.
I think it should also be noted that Collective Soul is not curretly a band having a tremendous amount of market success. They’ve sold around 250,000 stateside of their last album, which is far below what is considered big success in the industry. Because of their new indie direction they can make a much better living and release more while selling fewer albums. In this sense a major label can’t complete.
I can’t speak for the US, but the album has been pretty successful in Canada. Their new album was one of our chain’s top ten releases for the first two months of it’s release, and I believe it’s still in the top 30.
I think Canada has always been their biggest per-capita market. I seem to recall them mentioning that in interviews.
I absolutely love that cover. It’s so rich and warm.
I love the accoustic songs I’ve heard them do so a studio recording of them will be excellent.
I’m hoping I’ll be able to go. The last time I saw them was in ’99, so many, many years ago.
With my luck I will be in Japan when they come. I mean I would rather go to Japan.
But I would love to see Collective Soul live.
Well, here’s hoping the stars line up. CS is amazing live.
