This week I finally caught up with the latest issue of Elfquest: The Final Quest. It was satisfying to see story lines that have taken nearly four decades to tell finally delivering and to read the development of characters I have followed for many years though comics, novels and short stories.

Elfquest, for the uninitiated is summed up as follows by its creators:

“ELFQUEST IS THE LONGEST-RUNNING INDEPENDENT FANTASY SERIES, WITH MORE THAN 15 MILLION COMICS, GRAPHIC NOVELS AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS IN PRINT. THE STORY OF CUTTER, CHIEF OF THE WOLFRIDERS, AND HIS QUEST TO FIND OTHERS OF THEIR OWN KIND ON THE WORLD OF TWO MOONS, ELFQUEST WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1978 BY CREATORS WENDY AND RICHARD PINI. THE LATEST CYCLE, THE FINAL QUEST, IS BEING PUBLISHED BY DARK HORSE COMICS.”

Much of the Elfquest story prior to The Final Quest is available to read for free online and this latest series is available through digital outlets that sell Dark Horse comics. Most of the series can also be found in a variety of collected volumes in color or black and white.
