Raising the minimum wage to be closer to a living wage, with $15 being presented as the first target, is gaining momentum across North America. The opposition to raising wages often makes the untrue assertion that not many people would benefit. Even leaving aside the obvious economic growth we would see from putting more money in the hands of people who contribute the largest percentage of their income into the economy, a huge percentage of Canadians would immediately have better lives with a higher minimum wage. More than a third of Nova Scotians would receive a raise. One third of all women in Canada would receive a raise. We need legislation to ensure everyone in our country has the opportunity to live a good life and a higher minimum wage is a good place to start.
