This article is a great short piece on the legacy of coal miners’ unions and the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights.

“The things that workers have today aren’t just because companies and owners decided to give it to them,” said MacKinnon. “People didn’t decide that they were going to give living wages, or vacation pay, or health and safety. That wasn’t something that companies decided on their own to just offer. Those things had to be fought for.

“To me, I think people should be paid a fair wage so they can raise their family properly and without any worry about where the next paycheque is coming from or how we’re going to pay our bills. I think it’s just allowing people to have a source of dignity.”
