Marvel Comics make up a messy, weird, complicated array of stories. It could be daunting to try to understand the scope and weave of the narratives that Jack Kirby, Chris Claremont, Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and countless other creators have brought forth in the 80 years the Marvel stories have unfolded.
History of the Marvel Universe, at least so far, is wonderfully presenting that maddening grand story of the Marvel Universe in an accessible way. Mark Waid has distilled the bizarre cosmic stories that are, of course, the beginning of the universe superbly in this first issue and Javier Rodriguez’s pencils and colours are jaw-dropping. This does justice to the feel of the original stories but there is also a shockingly coherent thread throughout the issue.
Having a conversation between Galactus and Franklin Richards at the end of time as the framing story for this retelling of the biggest moments from thousands of pages was perfect and is a great nod to both of their importance to the universe from nearly the beginning. It grounds the weirder parts and the wink at what will come at the end is tantalizing.
