I’m continuing to be pretty heavily engaged over on my Mastodon account, @apollo@seizemeans.com, so I’m creating another digest of things I’ve shared there. Things I have or will share here as proper blog entries and some reshares I’ll exclude.

When I was an elementary school student, the local credit union held an essay contest for kids to express why credit unions matter. My essay won the competition and I received a commemorative coin set. I wish I still had the essay.

Matt Mullenweg has reportedly committed to add ActivityPub to Tumblr. This is a huge deal. Exactly what I hoped to see: a growing federation of social platforms, all committing to work with each other. It’s happening.
A new mural was painted along the low wall at the elementary school by my home. It features local landmarks such as the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, Halifax North Memorial Public Library, and the YMCA.
When I was a kid, a funeral co-op was started in my community. I believe Arimathea Funeral Cooperative is still the only one of its kind on mainland Nova Scotia, though Cape Breton has one now too. A democratically-accountable alternative to capitalist funeral homes was another example of something more humane being put together by a community. When my mother died they oversaw her funeral. This year I joined the co-op too.
A few years back I condensed my board game collection significantly and recently I’ve been doing some reorganizing ahead of probably giving away some games that don’t spark joy for me. Some of the joy-inducing bits I took out were these dice from HeroQuest. My original dice have a lot of fading so I had some new ones 3d printed.
I grew up in the small community of Dean, here in Nova Scotia. Most of my paternal family lived in the area. In the local church hall framed bits of history can be found, like this one for the school.
