Between laundry tasks this morning I decided to try a different approach for a game of HeroQuest. Instead of setting up the board and using miniatures, I just grabbed character sheets, dice, and cards and used the HeroQuest app. There’s something immersive about miniatures, but it was fun, tense, and engaging enough just using the app.
My heroes encountered victims of experiments, faced down a warlock that transformed into a dragon and a gargoyle, and collected some artifacts.
Saturday afternoon my work held a summer family event at Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park.
We started with a picnic in the large picnic field, where Celestine immediately ran off to the playground. As we ate, she insisted on chasing down butterflies, dragonflies, crickets, and grasshoppers.
We walked through all of the wetland trails before visiting the animal habitats.
We stopped in the public gardens this afternoon after getting a few groceries. The succulents and the dahlias are in fine form. Robin Jessome’s Nostalgia Project, a jazz band in the bandstand, played an arrangement of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” as a soundtrack to our walk through the dahlias.
This week I learned about the podcast “MOTHER,” She Wrote, which dramatizes and discusses EarthBound/MOTHER.
I decided it was finally time to play through EarthBound Beginnings. Today I played through enough of the game to be able to listen to the first episode. The weird America filtered through a Japanese lens is fun so far, even if the gameplay can be a slog. The podcast absolutely enriches the experience.
Back when I hosted big games nights regularly, we had a lot of fun playing Quelf. It’s a simple party game that gets wacky.
I’m downsizing my games collection and this is one I plan to drop off in a little library so that another group of players might find it and get some joy from it.
