Susana will be here in 10 days and I need to come up with some places to show her in the city. Where would you suggest? I’m considering the Citadel Hill and some of the museums so far in addition to my usual haunts.
Also, I’m trying to come up with a meal to make her that would be distinctly Canadian but I can’t think of a single one. I suppose I could add maple to something and go with that, but I’d rather something a bit more authentic. Have any ideas?
Oh, and can you suggest a spot where I might be able to find some wild flowers?
Thanks.

Poutine’s always good. I don’t think it features on any menu south of, like, maine.
But it’s hard to find animal-free gravy, sadly. 🙁
Ahhh. Well then I have no idea! D:
You could make a mushroom gravy.
I suggest joining and for this. 😉
I’ll take a look then. 🙂 Thanks
I wish I could be of more help aside from agreeing with the wild flowers.
I appreciate that very much, truly.
you would prolly have to make poutin…you can get vegitarian gravy I think at the great ocean. if not I can ask around. I am sure someone in my circle has an idea.
wildflowers you can find a lot of at yorkredoubt.
some locations I suggest are as follows
– york redoubt
– citadell hill
– museum of natural history
– museum of the atlantic
– the art museum
– the old triangle
– the ardmour
– chocolate lake
– point plesent park obviously
– if you have a chance mcnabs island
– eastern passage
Where is the Great Ocean?
Where is York Redoubt?
I live and work on Chocolate Lake, so that’s a certain place to visit, the parks as well.
I’d certainly like to visit McNab’s Island, though getting there would be a challenge.
wait a second. your a vegitarian and don’t know about great ocean? its on quinpool up a little past the oxford. awesome grocery store for the ecologically minded.
York redoubt you can get to by taking the 15 to the very end of its route.
McNabs can be reached by a ferry in eastern passage. $10 to get across and back for the day. Let me know when you go. I love McNabs Island.
Yep, I’m not one to frequent specialty stores, but I do know the store you’re talking about, I just didn’t know its name.
its right up your ally. you’ll love it.
Yeah, I’ve been there before and dug it. I’ll likely go there again to get some things when Susana visits since she wants to make me some Mexican dishes and I have little clue where else I might find proper ingredients for that. Know of anywhere that specializes in spices and such that might not be in a Sobeys?
This is sweet. 🙂
You could make a nice vegetable stew? Or, check online for Canadian foods… you may also want to look at Scandinavian or French recipes, since a large part of Canada’s population is French as far as I know, and some of the first settlers were Scandinavian.
I’ll have to look for Acadian (the original French settlers of Nova Scotia who were deported by the Brittish and from which Cajuns come) dishes. I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks.
No problem! 🙂 I hope you find something! And again, I strongly suggest looking through the memories or asking there if you still are out of ideas. 😀
I’ve joined there and will be sure to take a look. 🙂
if there was such a thing as veggie donair meat…that’s distinctly Halifax.
Um, garlic fingers with donair sauce? fiddle heads?
Take her to see Purdy’s Wharf!
We might eat out and she could have a donair, but I doubt there is such a thing as veggie donair meat.
Purdy’s Wharf would be a cool place to go.
apollo I think I heard someone talking about veggie donairs the other day. Possibly my aunt.
I’ll ask her.
Cool beans.
I am not sure how much it costs but the harbor hopper should be good. I had the privilage of going around the harbor in a boat once, it is quite a nice view. That might be a little touristy though..
Where might I find those?
Some good places were already listed. When my girlfriend came up last month, we went to a number of places in Halifax. She loved it.
-Citadel Hill
-The Public Gardens (great place to take a slow stroll. Especially now with the weather getting nicer)
-Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
-Aviatian Museum (across the highway from the airport. Kinda fun. ^_^)
-Point Pleasant Park
-There’s a dinner theatre off Barrington Street.
Don’t take her to the Natural History Museum. They’ve been tearing alot of it apart inside, and there’s almost no displays worth seeing at the moment. You might enjoy it, but it was a lower point in our trip.
Also, the Nova Scotia International Tattoo is playing, July 1-9. I don’t know if she’s staying till then, but if she is, it’s definitely worth checking out. Also, I think the Buskers are playing soon, aren’t they?
Thanks for your suggestions. I hadn’t thought of the dinner theatre. What’s it like?
The tattoo might be interesting but I don’t know it it’d be something she’d enjoy all that much.
She’ll be here until the 18th of July so buskers are out… I’m thinking we might catch some Jazz Fest stuff if she’d like. I want to play things by ear as much as possible, really. I have picnics and hiking planned but that will depend on the weather.
How have you been? Anything new?
It’s a decent place, the dinner theatre. Not an overly high scale one, but it was interesting. I can’t remember for the life of me what was playing.
Jazz Fest stuff is a good idea. Can’t really go wrong there unless you absolutely hate Jazz. =P When Heather came down, we played alot of it by ear. Made things interesting. We also didn’t exactly have the best of weather. If you can throw in some picnics and hiking, definitely go for it.
As for me, I’ve been good. Trying like crazy to find work, but maybe I’m just going about it all wrong. Other than that, things have been decent.
I don’t know if Susana likes jazz much, but she has a fairly broad taste in music so I’m sure she’d be open to it.
The weather seems to be in a pleasant trend, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed it’ll stay that way. However, Susana prefers cloudy and rainy weather because there’s not much of that in Mexico, so perhaps I shouldn’t hope for fine weather. A good walk in the rain is always fun.
I can certainly understand the struggle with finding work. I’ll be leaving this job sometime while Susana is here and starting a new one as a night auditor. It should be an interesting transition. I’ll wish you luck with your job hunt.
