Battle Bull

Battle Bull made its way into my Game Boy game collection and ended up being a game I returned to time and time again. It was frustratingly hard sometimes, but the simple mechanics of pushing blocks into enemies and escaping from them combined with the upgrade options made it compelling enough that I stuck with it.

There are a lot of games that were formative for me mostly because of the pure luck of finding them discounted. Battle Bull made its way into my Game Boy game collection and ended up being a game I returned to time and time again. It was frustratingly hard sometimes, but the simple mechanics of pushing blocks into enemies and escaping from them combined with the upgrade options made it compelling enough that I stuck with it.

Back in May Jeremy Parish featured the game in his Game Boy Works series and gave some of the history of the game. He’s a little harsher on the game than my nostalgia-addled mind would be capable of, but it’s a solid overview of the game. When I hear the soundtrack in the video I am immediately back on a road trip glued to my Game Boy screen like when I was 11.
