The new single from Softcult is a send up of incels in the form of a supreme shoegaze song and its video uses a vampire to represent the very real threat from incels and other abusers.
The band also just released the two latest issues of their ongoing zine series.
As women, we’re often taught to put up with toxic behaviour and just brush it off or ignore it. But I reached a point where I got sick of ignoring it. Harassment is never okay, and it shouldn’t have to reach a point where there are threats of violence to be taken seriously.
This song isn’t just about our experiences.
It’s about the countless women that have to deal with harassment and abuse from men who adopt incel ideologies as coping mechanisms for their anger and frustration.
This song is everything I want to say to all the incels out there with an obsessive hatred towards women they feel entitled to but will never have.
The video references Nosferatu. I wanted to show a figure that portrays extreme loneliness, possessiveness, selfishness, predatory lust and unquenchable desire for human intimacy, and what better example of that than a vampire?
Vampires are supposed to be demons that have possessed the body of a human and can only stay alive by drinking blood. To me they represent a metaphorical monster more than a literal one. They symbolize our inner fears, lusts and desires.
They are a mirror revealing the depths of depravity.
Nosferatu embodies the real monsters that we need to be afraid of, that walk among us and prey on the most vulnerable.
