This week’s Voltes V episode, episode 5, had a focus on Hiyoshi, who definitely wasn’t endeared to me. His childish antics felt out of place in an alien invasion but overall it as a fun episode that progressed things nicely.
The story begins with Hiyoshi selfishly wanting to go to a model race competition and going AWOL to attend. Kenichi is the voice of reason but isn’t heeded.
The drama continues with Megumi siding with Hiyoshi and the base leader with Kenichi.
The villains jump into action to try to kill Hiyoshi, as expected. Their enthusiasm for torture fit well.
Hiyoshi attends his race, he’s predictably attacked by a beast knight, which destroys his beloved battleship. He attacks but is overwhelmed.
A second beast attacks the Falcon base and demonstrates the first of two innovations in the enemy’s approach this episode.
The team is encouraged to rescue Hiyoshi and they bring him back into the fold just in time for the next surprise.
The villains combine the two beast knights into one, and attack the team. It’s nice to see some changes in strategy happening here.
Voltes V is placed in peril, but the battle is ultimately won by the team.
The episode ends with Hiyoshi fundraising to restore Battleship Mikasa and sending his teammates comically running to avoid giving more.
