Honeycrisp apples are my favourite variety, and those apples are so widely available now thanks to it not being trademarked and having an expired patent. This video from NPR’s Planet Money explores how the honeycrisp was able usher in better varieties of apples to the market. It’s only hinted at that it also saddled us with some awful trends in trademarking apples that may never be able to be grown widely, even if they taste great.
