I’ve been enthusiastic about the Fediverse for a while and today I started a Pixelfed instance using one of my old domains, FrozenTruth.com. Pixelfed is a decentralized alternative to photo sharing services like Instagram and allows users from one server to follow users on other servers, making it more open and expansive than for-profit alternatives.
PixelFed is a federated social image sharing platform, similar to Instagram. Federation is done using the ActivityPub protocol, which is used by Mastodon, PeerTube, Pleroma, and more. Through ActivityPub PixelFed can share and interact with these platforms, as well as other instances of PixelFed.
What is PixelFed?
I’ve started my instance closed to account creation so that I can learn the ropes before inviting anyone else to join in. If you are interested in having an account on my instance, though, get in touch.
If you would like to follow my Pixelfed account, you can search for https://frozentruth.com/apollo from your own Pixelfed instance or from Mastodon and other places in the Fediverse.
Since I’ll have a photo-focused outlet, I plan to start another Project 365, taking a photo each day for a year. I started a personal 365 challenge in 2007 and again in 2012-2013, and enjoy having a prompt to take a moment each day to snap a photo. I’ve also been blogging every day since December and it feels like a good time to add a new habit to the mix.

On August 20 last year I started taking a photo for each day and posting it at my FrozenTruth.com Pixelfed account. This Project 365 was a good motivator to keep me focused on capturing things happening in my life, especially those bits that don’t revolve around my daughter’s first year and 4 months.
